From the Mexipunx series by Rubén Ortiz-Torres
I had a hard time choosing which ones to post in this set- I may post more- but I’m adding him to my list of favorite photographers. Ortiz-Torres was already fully immersed in the punk scene in the late ’70s-’80s in Mexico when he decided to document it.
I was really blown away when I saw these photographs in class, not only because we’re both Mexican; but because he captured this unique synthesis of Mexican tradition, spirituality, and its influence on a newer generation that sought its own voice; yet, even as new voices emerge there is still that connection to the past.
